He who sings scares away his woes.

About This Quote

He who sings scares away his woes. “The one who sings scatters his troubles” is a phrase that Shakespeare may have borrowed from a much older source, the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, author of the Divine Comedy. In the Divine Comedy, Dante described a man who was able to turn his sadness into something beautiful by singing. When this man began singing, all the people listening to him were able to forget their own problems and feel happier.

The idea of singing as a way to deal with sadness or other emotions can be found at least as far back as Homer’s Odyssey. In the episode in which Odysseus has been turned into a pig, by Circe, he is able to find comfort by singing.
